Saturday 22nd April

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Edin Terzić’s men still in the race

Dortmund have conceded 10 goals in their last 4 matches across all competitions, and haven’t kept a clean sheet in any competition since 25th February. However, they’re still in the hunt for the Bundesliga title, just 2 points adrift of Bayern Munich.

Eintracht have announced that outstanding attacking midfielder Daichi Kamada will be leaving the club at the end of the season. The Japanese star will be keen to go out on a high: he has 7 Bundesliga goals and 4 assists this term. Dortmund left-back Raphaël Guerreiro (11) and Eintracht attacker Randal Kolo Muani (10) are the only players in the Bundesliga this season to hit double figures for assists.

The hosts likely need to collect 3 points to continue breathing down Bayern’s neck in the pursuit of the Bundesliga crown. It’s got all the makings of an entertaining Saturday night clash where the creative players will look to thrive and exploit space.

Eintracht are winless in their last 7 league matches, drawing 3 of those 1-1

Sunday 23rd April

PSV vs Ajax

Title moving out of reach but still plenty to play for

These 2 giants of Dutch football meet twice inside 8 days, starting with this Eredivisie meeting on Sunday. They’re locked together on 62 points and it would take a minor miracle for either of them to catch Feyenoord, who are on 70 points with 5 games to play.

That means they’re likely competing for a single place in the Champions League qualifiers, while this match is also a dress rehearsal for the KNVB Cup Final a week later. These sides have scored 157 goals between them in the league this season and are the 2 most prolific teams by a distance, so there could be some fireworks in Eindhoven.

Did you know?

PSV won the last 3 meetings between these sides by a 9-5 aggregate score

Newcastle vs Tottenham

Champions League riches at stake

This is a match that Tottenham can’t really afford to lose if they want to stay in the hunt for a top-4 finish.

Newcastle's 5-match winning streak, in which 3 matches ended 2-1, was abruptly halted by a 3-0 defeat against in-form Aston Villa last time out. Spurs continue to be predictably unpredictable after a 2-3 defeat at home to Bournemouth which followed a controversial 2-1 win over Brighton. Spurs’ last 5 in the Premier League have all featured goals at both ends.

Newcastle, though still the team with the division’s best defensive record (24 goals conceded), haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 3 outings.

Tottenham are winless in 6 away matches across all competitions

Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid

Xavi’s men stumbling to the title

Barcelona are still the runaway LaLiga leaders, ahead of Real Madrid by 11 points with 9 matches to play. They haven’t scored in any of their last 3 matches, though, which isn’t something usually associated with Barcelona and their regular free-scoring ways.

By contrast, Atléti are on fire. They’ve won 6 LaLiga matches on the bounce and are unbeaten in the top tier in 13 matches overall. Their last defeat came against none other than Barcelona on 8th January, so they should arrive at Camp Nou full of confidence.

Antoine Griezmann, once a Barcelona player, will want to improve on his strangely poor personal record against the Catalan club. He’s scored just 2 goals in 20 LaLiga matches against them throughout his career.

Did you know?

Barça’s Robert Lewandowski (23) and Atléti’s Griezmann (19) are the 2 players with the most direct goal contributions in LaLiga this season

Juventus vs Napoli

Old Lady seeking to slow down Napoli’s coronation

It’s seemingly a matter of time before Napoli are crowned champions of Italy for the first time since 1990, and only the third time in their history. This match will see them visit the Juventus team that won the Scudetto in 9 of the last 11 seasons. Their grip on Italy’s top prize has loosened though, with the last 2 Scudetto crowns collected by Inter and most recently AC Milan.

That being said, Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli have hit a bit of a blip. They’ve only won 1 of their last 3 in the league, and they exited the Champions League after a 2-1 aggregate defeat to AC Milan in the quarter-finals.

Juve have plenty to play for. They enter the weekend 9 points adrift of the Champions League places and simply have to keep winning to keep their slim hopes of a top 4 finish alive.

Did you know?

Napoli haven’t won a Serie A match away to Juventus since April 2018

Lyon vs Marseille

Lacazette’s still got it

Where would Lyon be this season without Alexandre Lacazette’s goals? The former Arsenal striker has struck 19 times in Ligue 1 this term. Only Lille’s Jonathan David and PSG’s Kylian Mbappé (20) have more to their names heading into this round. Lyon have won their last 3 league matches and a finish inside the top 5 isn’t out of the question.

As for Marseille, 3 draws in their last 5 matches have severely dented their title chances, now trailing PSG by 8 points with 7 games to play. It’s not impossible, but they would need to be pretty much perfect from here on in to stand a chance of tracking the Parisians down. PSG face all of the current bottom 3 in their next 4 outings, so perhaps 2nd place and an automatic spot in next season’s Champions League group stage will prove a more realistic goal.
