Saturday 20th May

Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig

Bundesliga title race boils down to the final 2 games

Perennial champions Bayern Munich are being taken all the way to the finish line this season by an exciting Borussia Dortmund side.

Bayern’s penultimate assignment is most certainly their trickiest, against a third-placed RB Leipzig team with 7 wins in their last 8. They’re on a roll, with Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai at the heart of the action with 3 goals and a red card in his last 4 appearances. Bayern’s star talent Jamal Musiala has 21 direct goal contributions in the Bundesliga this season.

There is absolutely no margin for error now as a slip here would open the door for Dortmund, who are away to Augsburg on Sunday, and they trail Bayern by a solitary point ahead of the weekend. Bayern haven’t lost any of their last 11 meetings with RB Leipzig, although 5 of those have been draws. Another stalemate here could prove fatal.

For the record, Bayern face mid-table Köln on the final day, and Dortmund have mid-table opposition of their own on 27th May in the shape of Mainz. It feels like it’s going to the wire and this should be a cracking start to a blockbuster weekend of football.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

Tricky Trees almost safe

The wheels have fallen off of Arsenal’s valiant title charge. A home defeat against Brighton means Man City only need a win over Chelsea to guarantee a fifth Premier League title in six seasons, and the title will be wrapped up before City kick a ball against Chelsea should Arsenal lose to Forest.

Mikel Arteta’s team have collected just 9 points from the last 21 on offer and a trip to Forest, who are tantalisingly close to their objective of staying in the division, is a tricky one. If Forest took even a point here, they’d secure safety with a game to spare were Leeds and Leicester to lose to West Ham and Newcastle. Their final match is away to mid-table Crystal Palace.

Forest have collected 27 of their 34 points this season at the City Ground. Another one here and Steve Cooper’s men might be able to start planning for another campaign in the top-flight. They may also feel this is a good time to play Arsenal.

Forest’s last 5 matches have produced a total of 23 goals, while Arsenal have kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 9 Premier League outings

Lille vs Marseille

Champions League group place still in sight for OM

Marseille can leapfrog Lens into an automatic Champions League qualification spot but, given their 2-point deficit, they may need to be near-perfect in their final 3 games and hope for other results to go their way. They do have first-mover advantage this weekend though with Lens only in action on Sunday away to Lorient. A Marseille win would apply some serious pressure.

Lille are in pretty indifferent form with just 1 win in their last 4 Ligue 1 matches. They’ve failed to score in each of their last 2, and they’re in a Europa Conference League qualifying battle with Rennes breathing down their necks. Another tense round of matches is expected as the French season draws to a close.

Man City vs Chelsea

The ribbons are almost sky blue again

Chelsea are heading for a first bottom-half finish since 1995/96 under Glenn Hoddle. It’s hardly what Blues fans expected after their huge financial outlay on players at the beginning of the campaign. Chelsea haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their 8 matches under Frank Lampard, and a shutout at the Etihad Stadium appears extremely unlikely.

City have scored an average of 2.63 goals per league game over the course of the season and they know 3 points here will wrap up the title. As they often do at this stage of a season, City have gone on a relentless winning run, claiming 11 in a row in the league since a surprise 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest in February.

Almost nobody can live with Pep Guardiola’s team when they’re in this mood. Ilkay Gündoğan is the man to watch: he was directly involved in all 3 goals against Everton last weekend. According to SkySportsStatto, it’s the first time he’s directly contributed to 3 goals in a Premier League game since a 4-0 win over West Brom in October 2016.

Napoli vs Inter

Premium striking quality on show

Newly-crowned champions Napoli lost 2-0 at Monza last weekend and you’d understand if they’ve had a slight hangover from the raucous celebrations in Naples. It is, after all, their first Scudetto crown since 1990 when Diego Maradona wore the famous light blue jersey.

Back to business though and they host Inter at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Inter got the better of city rivals Milan to book their place in the Champions League final on 10th June.

Inter’s schedule is especially busy. 3 days after this match against the Italian champions, they face Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final before Serie A matches against Atalanta and Torino to round out the domestic campaign. Then, the Champions League final looms ever so large.

There’s every reason to expect an entertaining battle here between a relaxed host and a visiting side high on confidence. In terms of the top scorer race, Inter’s Lautaro Martínez trails Napoli’s Victor Osimhen by 3 goals and would need a staggering final push to overhaul the Nigerian for that individual award.

Valencia vs Real Madrid

A free swing for the hosts?

It’s been a disappointing campaign for Los Che, who languish in 14th place, although they have picked up 3 wins in their last 5 LaLiga matches in an impressive late surge. They’re still not even remotely out of the woods though, just 3 points clear of the relegation zone with 4 games to play.

Regardless of the outcome of their monumental Champions League semi-final second leg against Man City, Los Blancos will need to manage their players carefully with second place in the league not yet sealed. Finishing below Atlético isn’t something they’ll want to entertain.

Valencia will be hoping for a tired, under-strength Madrid side here to maximise their chances of taking something from the contest, and anything would probably be viewed as a bonus in their push for survival. Valencia’s BIGGEST match is perhaps still on the horizon though, against relegation-threatened Espanyol on the penultimate day of the season.
