6 BIG talking points from the Premier League weekend

The Premier League season is just 3 rounds old but there are already so many things to discuss. Let’s get straight into it.

What’s Ange Postecoglou cooking?

Young Senegalese midfielder Pape Matar Sarr followed up his goal-scoring performance against Man United with an assist against Bournemouth in Tottenham’s 2-0 win.

Spurs look like the free-flowing team which used to entertain fans at White Hart Lane, in life after Kane.

Bruno bails United out

Red Devils skipper Bruno Fernandes inspired a 3-2 win from 2-0 down at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese playmaker has 45 goals and 34 assists from 127 appearances. Where would they be without him?

Arsenal don’t look like themselves

Mikel Arteta’s men conceded in the opening minute against Fulham after a sloppy concession of the ball, took the lead and then got pegged back by João Palhinha, outstanding on the day. 2-2 it finished.

To compound matters for Arsenal, Man City claimed a 2-1 win at Sheffield United courtesy of an 89th minute Rodri goal. They’re the only remaining side with a 100% record which is ominous for the chasing pack, notably Arsenal. The Gunners face Man United next weekend.

Everton already in trouble

3 games, 3 defeats and zero goals. That’s the harsh reality for Toffees fans who must feel like their final day survival last season is an eternity ago. Their next assignment in the league is a trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United. That’s already a crunch fixture.

There will be bad days for Brighton

Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls won their first 2 matches 4-1, but a 1-3 home defeat to West Ham has brought them back down to earth. The Hammers are showing that you don’t need a lot of the ball to win a football match with David Moyes’ men enjoying just 22% possession. They made it count in a BIG way.

James Ward-Prowse has started his West Ham career in superb fashion while Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio continue to run their socks off for the cause.

Brighton’s games tend to produce goals, that’s for sure.

Best for last as Liverpool storm St James’ Park

There were 6 away wins in this round of Premier League action and Liverpool’s success at Newcastle was undoubtedly the most dramatic.

The Reds were reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute when Virgil van Dijk was given his marching orders for the first time as a Liverpool player. That came just 3 minutes after Anthony Gordon profited from a Liverpool mistake to race through and score between Alisson’s legs. The Brazilian keeper atoned by stunningly denying a thunderous left-footed volley from Miguel Almirón. That would prove crucial.

Jürgen Klopp sent Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez on with 13 minutes to play and he scored a scintillating double to stun Newcastle and send the away supporters into raptures. What a game.

This was the 42nd time Liverpool had scored a Premier League winner in the 90th minute or later.
