Premier League matchweek 5 produced thrills and spills aplenty. Here’s a quick recap of the major highlights. All numerical stats are via OptaJoe.

Liverpool are flying again

The early kick-off on Saturday at Molineux wasn’t going according to plan for a depleted Liverpool side lacking cohesion and energy. There was no Trent Alexander-Arnold or Virgil van Dijk and, for the first 45 minutes, it showed. However, they rallied back from a goal down after Wolves failed to convert a number of presentable chances, with Pedro Neto shining for the hosts in the first period.

Jürgen Klopp’s men are now unbeaten in 16 EPL matches. Skipper on the day Andy Robertson scored on his 200th EPL appearance for Liverpool and Mo Salah chalked up his 200th direct goal involvement (139 goals, 61 assists) on his 223rd EPL appearance for the club. A good day to be a Red.

De Zerbi has us entertained

Brighton played Man Utd off the park at Old Trafford with Tariq Lamptey, usually a right-back, hurting them time and again from the opposite full-back slot. Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls have now scored in 21 consecutive Premier League matches, a streak stretching back to February. United, meanwhile, have lost 3 of their first 5 league matches for the first time since 1989/90.

Danny Welbeck enjoys facing his former employers; he’s got 4 Premier League goals against United.

JWP keeps scoring but City keep winning

Bernardo Silva sparkled for Man City as they showed their title mettle to come from a goal down to beat in-form West Ham 3-1. New Hammers signing James Ward-Prowse has now scored or assisted in 6 consecutive EPL appearances for the first time in his career after grabbing the opener. That couldn’t stop David Moyes’ side from tasting their first defeat of the campaign though.

Spurs leave it late to stay unbeaten

New Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is now unbeaten in his last 50 league home matches as a manager, with 142 goals and 42 wins in that sequence spanning stints with Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic and now Spurs.

Tottenham staged a stunning come-from-behind win against Sheffield United despite still trailing in the 98th minute. They lie 2nd in the table approaching the North London Derby next weekend. Substitute Richarlison had a cameo to remember with a goal and assist in front of a rapturous home crowd.

Toffees fans feel the heat already

Arsenal claimed a 1-0 win at Goodison Park courtesy of Leandro Trossard’s well-worked goal from a corner, their first league success at Everton since 2017, to keep them level on points with Tottenham ahead of Sunday’s derby at the Emirates. The Gunners have 12 league clean sheets away from home since the start of 2022/23, while Everton haven’t scored a single goal or claimed a single point at home this season.
