Switzerland vs Cameroon

Swiss precision meets Cameroonian unpredictability

It’s been a while since the Swiss progressed to the quarter-finals of the globe’s BIGGEST international event (68 years, to be exact) but The Red Crosses, captained by Granit Xhaka, will be quietly confident they can qualify from their group at least in 2022. They breezed through qualifying, not losing a single game and conceding just 2 goals in the process.

Rigobert Song’s Indomitable Lions will be heavily reliant on the goalscoring exploits of experienced strike duo Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar (scorer of 8 goals at AFCON 2021), and the growing influence of midfield pivot André-Frank Zambo Anguissa. Did you know Rigobert Song was named in the 1994 Cameroon squad at the age of 17 alongside the 42-year-old Roger Milla, the largest age gap between teammates in a World Cup squad ever?

Uruguay vs South Korea

Clash of continents but not styles

La Celeste are stocked with wily old veterans in the shape of Diego Godín, Martin Caceres, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez, who scored a brace when these sides met all the way back at South Africa 2010 in the round of 16. This quartet will all be participating at their fourth World Cup. On the other end of that spectrum, Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez is seen as Suárez’s successor in the number 9 role, and versatile 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde is one of the finest players on the planet in his position.

South Korea talisman Son Heung-min fractured an eye socket while playing for Tottenham in the Champions League but is apparently fit to take part. Uruguay’s collection of attacking talent will also have to get past the considerable frame of Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, who has been a menace in both boxes, with 7 clean sheets in 20 appearances this season for his club, and 2 headed goals.

Interestingly, South Korea’s Taeguk Warriors are the first country outside Europe and South America to reach 10 consecutive World Cup finals. In fact, there are only 4 other countries who have qualified for the past 10 tournaments and they are Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Spain.

Portugal vs Ghana

Black Stars must compete in midfield

The key battle will be in the engine room, where Arsenal’s Thomas Partey looks to exert himself against Portugal’s own Premier League stars Bruno Fernandes and Rúben Neves. The Premier League theme doesn’t end there. Man United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, a player shrouded by controversy for the past week or so, is aiming to become the only player to score at 5 different World Cups.

Opponents Ghana have gotten themselves on the scoresheet in 9 of their 12 matches at finals, so they’ll be confident they can cause a stir in Group H. In terms of potential lucky charms, Crystal Palace man Jordan Ayew has scored in 14 matches for Ghana and only been on the losing side in 1 of them.

Qatar vs Senegal

Lions of Teranga looking to spoil the party

The hosts took a hiding in their matchday 1 opener against Ecuador, where the gulf in class between the sides was evident from the first whistle. Senegal kept things tight before eventually succumbing to Netherlands, and Aliou Cissé’s men will be confident of picking up 3 precious points here as they scramble for a qualifying place.

Netherlands vs Ecuador

Ecuador aim to make life difficult for the Dutch

Ecuador impressed in their 2-0 defeat of Qatar, becoming the first team in World Cup history to beat the host nation on matchday 1. Now, the calibre of opposition is altogether different as they face 2010 runners-up, the Netherlands.

The Ecuadorians have now kept 7 consecutive clean sheets, a mighty impressive sequence, but that statistic will come under scrutiny against a Dutch side boasting plenty of young attacking quality.

Watch out for Ecuador’s Brighton trio Pervis Estupiñán, Moisés Caicedo and Jeremy Sarmiento. As for the Dutch, they were made to work hard for their win against African champions Senegal on matchday 1, eventually grabbing 2 late goals. This will be another stern test of their patience.

England vs USA

Stars and Stripes will make a game of it

England dispatched Iran by an emphatic 6-2 scoreline on matchday 1 with 5 different players getting their names on the scoresheet. USA took the lead against Wales through Timothy Weah but were pegged back by USA-based star Gareth Bale from the penalty spot, to begin their campaign with a 1-1 draw.

6 Premier League stars got game time for the USA there, and they’ll all be determined to keep things tight against Gareth Southgate’s men. The Three Lions have been drawing at half time in 9 of their last 16 games, so they can sometimes struggle to impose themselves right from the start of matches.
